Is Keyword Stuffing Effective in 2019?
Keyword stuffing is the practice of repeating a keyword over and over again in blog posts or website pages in an effort to increase search engine rankings. After all, if someone searches for a specific phrase, your website should come up first if it features those words often. Right?
In earlier days of search engines, keyword stuffing worked. Many website owners failed to invest in quality content in favor of repetitive keyword stuffing schemes that got them the search engine results they wanted.
As search engines became more sophisticated, keyword stuffing fell out of favor for original, high-quality content. Some marketers still wonder if keyword stuffing could work in 2019 and beyond. Here are some things to keep in mind when it comes to keyword stuffing in 2019.
Search Engines Penalize Keyword Stuffing
Search engines, such as Google and Bing, have developed ways to penalize websites that use keyword stuffing in an attempt to “game the system” and receive higher search engine rankings.
Typically, content that is stuffed with keywords sacrifices readability and quality. This tactic doesn’t produce the relevant content that the search engines want and will rank lower because of it.
Keywords Still Need to be Prevalent
To some degree, marketers and writers still need to stuff keywords into content to have it rank in search engines. But the overuse of keywords or poor-quality content should be avoided.
Keywords should be used as often as possible in a way that complies with SEO best practices. Using a tool like the Yoast WordPress plug-in can make it easy to know how many times a keyword needs to be repeated to have the desired keyword density.
The infinite number of possible keywords means that SEO writers need to use highly targeted keywords throughout an article or page over more generic terms. Ideally, each page will have one targeted keyword for which to rank.
For instance, a page called “Houston Web Development Services” should try to use this as a keyword. Trying to also rank for “Houston Web Company” on the same page is less effective. Using a separate page for this second keyword should work better.
Consistent Use in Headers, Alt Tags, and Meta
Just because you aren’t repeating the same keyword in the text doesn’t mean you can’t use the keyword elsewhere on the web page. You can use it in the H1 and H2 headers, title, alt text for images, and meta description to increase its ranking. Just make sure that you’re not repeating the keyword too often in the actual copy of the article.
When it comes to keyword density, keyword stuffing, and SEO, longer content is always better. Repeating a keyword five times in a 300-word article has a higher keyword density than it would in a 500-word article. Whenever possible, make articles more than 500 words.
In short, keyword stuffing is so 2003. With new penalties on search engines in place to promote high-quality content, it isn’t a viable strategy to simply repeat the same phrase. However, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t strategically place keywords throughout your blog articles and website pages.
